History

Designed in 1945 and first flew in 1947, the Sikorsky S-52 began life as a military helicopter. In 1964 Orlando Helicopter Airways purchased the type certificate and inventory, for powerline inspection. In the late 1980s, the S-52 design was adapted by Vertical Aviation Technologies into a kit-built helicopter, know as the Hummingbird. This adaptation retained the basic airframe, blades, and main transmission of the original S-52 but introduced several modifications. The Hummingbird features a four-seat enclosed cabin, quadracycle landing gear, and a modernized nose section. Overall, the Sikorsky S-52 and its derivative, the Hummingbird, represent significant milestones in helicopter design, demonstrating the adaptability and longevity of the original Sikorsky engineering.

How It Started

The Sikorsky S-52 is a utility helicopter developed by Sikorsky Aircraft in the late 1940s. It was used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
